Loft Stories: Eureka's hospitality in Noto between a flat tire and two "cheerful youngsters"
Hosting means opening the doors of one's home, but for us, authentic hospitality in Noto also means lending a helping hand when a trip takes a completely unexpected turn.
Today, we want to share the true story of two very special British guests: a couple in their eighties (him) and seventies (her), two "cheerful youngsters" in spirit and energy, who were the protagonists of a late-night mishap that ended in the best possible way.
A delay, a flat tire, and plenty of British philosophy
Their adventure began with a minor communication hitch: having not checked the chat before setting off, their check-in had already slipped past the scheduled time. But the real plot twist arrived just 10 minutes away from Noto: a flat tire in the middle of the road.
On the other end of the phone, with that classic and admirable British phlegm, they reassured us: "Don't worry, we've called roadside assistance, take your time!".
However, minutes stretched into hours. We waited for over two hours, worried about where and how they would spend the night, given that the tow truck was taking its time and the hour was getting later and later. At one point, with remarkable adaptability, they even told us not to worry and that they would just "make do there" for the night... in the middle of the road! Naturally, we couldn't just sit back and relax.
"Is there Uber in Noto at 11 PM?"
Around 11:00 PM, the call finally came: roadside assistance had managed to pick them up with the tow truck and drop them off at the entrance of Noto. The problem? With luggage in tow, at that late hour and at their venerable age, reaching our loft on foot through the uphill streets of the town center was practically an impossible task.
With lovely British naivety, they asked us over the phone: "Is there an Uber service around here?". Anyone who knows Sicily knows that asking for Uber in Noto at 11:00 PM brings a smile to your face, but the situation was serious and required an immediate solution.
An extraordinary rescue and hospitality in Noto
Neither the law nor our normal job as a host in Noto includes a shuttle or roadside recovery service. However, facing two people of that age, exhausted at the entrance of the city late at night, empathy prevailed over everything else.
Thanks to the immediate availability of a local who lent us a hand with their car, we set off right away to pick them up at the entrance of Noto, load their luggage, and bring them safely to the loft.
The value of humanity (beyond the ordinary)
Seeing the relief in their eyes when they stepped into the car and, shortly after, crossed the threshold of our loft was a moment of great human warmth.
We always like to clarify that episodes like this are entirely exceptional and extraordinary: we are neither a taxi service nor roadside rescue! But when faced with a real emergency and people who truly need help, going the extra mile is simply part of how we understand hosting.
The following days for our two "cheerful youngsters" were a smooth succession of walks, sunshine, and smiles, turning a high-stress night into a travel anecdote they will remember forever!
