According to ancient Sicilian folklore, swordfish always journey through the ocean in pairs, bound by a loyalty so powerful it overcomes survival instinct itself.
Legend has it that during traditional hunting aboard Felucca boats, if sailors harpoon the female first, the male refuses to flee. Instead, he renounces his freedom and stays faithfully by her side, frantically swimming around the boat until he allows himself to be caught or dies of heartbreak rather than abandon his mate.

“For thousands of years, the sad legend of the swordfish has been passed down among Sicilian and Calabrian fishermen. It is said that the story celebrates the love of a pair of swordfish in the waters of the Strait of Messina. When the female is struck in the heart by fishermen during a hunt, the devoted male does everything he can to try and save her; ignoring his own safety, he cries out and fights attempting to free her. He never abandons her, staying by her side until the very end. Overcome by the heartbreak of losing his mate, he gives up and allows himself to be captured, choosing to die together with her.”
