When people think of Noto, they immediately picture golden palaces, the majestic Cathedral, and Baroque architecture glowing under the Sicilian sun. But there is a completely different side to Noto, quiet, hidden among the scents of the Mediterranean scrub, and known to very few travelers: Noto Antica.

Atop Mount Alveria, just a few miles from the modern town center we visit today, lie the ruins of the former city. A magical place frozen in time, perfect for those who love peaceful walks and listening to the stories that only ancient stone can tell.

The Story of a World Before 1693

Before the devastating earthquake of 1693 leveled much of eastern Sicily, Noto stood perched high above, strategically set between deep gorges and steep rocky cliffs. For centuries, it was an impregnable stronghold, inhabited since the times of the Sicels and later flourishing under the Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, and Normans.

That tragic day in January 1693 brought everything to a halt. The city was abandoned, and its residents decided to rebuild the "new" Noto lower down the valley, giving rise to the Baroque masterpiece we admire today.

Ancient Noto, however, was left as it was. Over the centuries, nature slowly reclaimed its space, enveloping stone portals, ancient apses, watermills, and rock-cut wine presses.

What to See Along the Trail

Walking through Noto Antica isn't like visiting a traditional archaeological site with tickets and barriers: it is a free, immersive excursion into nature and memory.

La Porta della Montagna (Mountain Gate): The imposing main entrance to the old fortified city. Stepping through this stone arch truly feels like traveling back in time.

The Royal Castle and Prisons: Heading up toward the highest points, you’ll discover the remains of the medieval castle and the ancient prisons, where wall carvings left by inmates centuries ago are still visible.

Cava Carosello and the Watermills: Descending into the valley floor, the landscape transforms. You’ll find yourself surrounded by lush greenery along the Asinaro River, amidst ancient stone mills once used for processing grain and leather, as well as small pools of crystal-clear water.

Insider Tip (To Make the Most of It)

Best Time to Visit: Go early in the morning or late in the afternoon, especially during spring, autumn, or mild winter days.

What to Bring: Wear comfortable sneakers or hiking boots, carry a refillable water bottle, and bring plenty of time, there is no need to rush here.

The Atmosphere: Pause for a moment near the Porta della Montagna when the breeze blows. Close your eyes, listen to the rustling olive trees and smell the wild thyme, and you might just catch the distant echoes of a bygone era.

Noto Antica proves that Sicily’s most authentic beauty is often found where rushed tourism forgets to look.
