The secret to picking prickly pears without getting pricked? Here it is: the 'Coppo' (or 'Cuoppu').

When our guests return from a stroll through the historic center or the vibrant open-air markets of South-Eastern Sicily, they often tell us how intrigued they were by the unusual items hanging at local craft stalls.

Among the various Noto Sicily curiosities, one of the most puzzling is this: a collection of galvanized metal pipes hanging in clusters that, at first glance, look like car exhausts, gutter components, or strange handmade trumpets!

If you spotted them while wandering through our Baroque streets and wondered what on earth they were—without daring to ask the vendor—we are here to reveal this charming secret of local Sicilian life.

Among Noto Sicily Curiosities: The Coppo for Prickly Pears

The object in the photo is a traditional Sicilian agricultural tool known as the Coppo (u coppu p'i ficurindia in local dialect).

As you explore the countryside surrounding our holiday home, you will notice iconic cactus plants (Opuntia) laden with sweet, colorful fruits. Harvesting them by hand, however, is a tricky task: their skin is covered with hundreds of tiny, invisible prickles (called glochids) that easily embed themselves into your skin at the slightest touch.

Sicilian farmers created this ingenious device to harvest the delicious fruit safely, without ever touching it directly.

How Does Traditional Sicilian Ingenuity Work?

The design of the coppo is a brilliant example of simplicity and practical resourcefulness:

  • The Attachment: A long wooden pole or bamboo stick is fitted into the small side tube.

  • The Capture: Using the long handle, the harvester reaches up to the cactus pad and gently frames the prickly pear inside the main metal cylinder.

  • The Twist: A quick twist of the wrist cuts the stem. The fruit drops safely inside the metal pipe, ready to be deposited into a basket without touching the ground or anyone's hands.

Historically, these gatherers were woven from wild reeds or olive wood. Over time, local tinsmiths (stagnatariddi) began crafting them from sheet metal and zinc, giving them the iconic look you see in the markets today.

And once the fruits are harvested?

Once detached from the plant thanks to the coppo, prickly pears are ready to be enjoyed fresh or transformed into delicious traditional Sicilian specialties, such as jams, mostarda, and liqueurs.

Curious to discover how to peel them without pricking your fingers, learn about their health benefits, and explore traditional delicacies during your stay in Noto?

A Unique Souvenir from Historic Noto

Today, the coppo has evolved into a piece of authentic Sicilian folk art. Many travelers love buying one as an original souvenir, repurposing it as a rustic decor element to hang in their kitchen or garden back home.
